Flash Layering

Sat Jul 5th 13:11:07 2008 *

I've just come across a problem which may cause me a headache. I try and avoid Flash usually, so I'm not too versed with this kind of thing.

Basically, I have a Flash object immediately below a horizontal DHTML menu. The menu drops down behind the Flash object, whereas I need it to drop in front. After some brief research, it appears that z-index fiddling wont be of much help, and I tried changing wmode to transparent, but to no avail. Does anyone know of a work around for this, or can point me in the right direction?

If it makes things any clearer, I can provide a screen shot if required to illustrate what it is I'm talking about.

Update: Fixed it by updating the DHTML and adding the transparency mode to the parameters and embed tags for wmode. It appears that the Linux implementation of Flash can't support this - X is good to go, but Adobe have yet to fix this bug in Flash for Linux. It works with Windows. I have no idea about OSX.

Tech: IE6

Thu Jun 12th 17:06:51 2008 *

When are we going to see the end of this disease of a browser? IE7 has been around for a couple of years now, and I've even started playing with the IE8 BETAs. Yet, as much as I'd like to disregard the pos that is IE6, I can't. It still represents a large enough market share that I can't ignore it. I'm hoping that within a year or so, I'll be able to start ignoring it, but for now, it's still a bane for me. I know for a fact the guy who I'll be presenting some of my latest work to uses IE6, so for that reason alone it has to look good for that 'browser'. It's just such a pita. I get so tempted to put some browser detection code in and have an obnoxious upgrade message appear to anyone with IE 6 or below. But, alas, professionalism prevails.

In related news, Opera 9.5 was released today (woo) and FF3 is officially here in the next couple of days. Excellent.

Oh yeah, I also turned 22 on Monday.

Tech: CSS Help Required

Sun Dec 9th 22:42:07 2007 *

This goes out to anyone who might know the nuances of IE6 more than I. I have an overall placeholder div, which I need to be centered. The following works in Firefox and Opera, but not IE6. I don't have access to IE7, but I suspect it may well work due to improved CSS compatibility, I could be wrong though. Anyway, there will still be a large IE6 audience for this, so it's crucial it works under IE6.

margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;
How do I get the same effect in IE6? This div needs to show up centered in all the major browsers. I've searched the net and so far found a lot of people asking the same question with no satisfactory answer. I'll update on my progress here if I sort it before I get a response.

Incidentally, this is why I hate site design. At least with a compiled language you know where you stand and what you get. At least on the syntactical level.

Well it's been far too long since I've made an entry here, so here's a quick update. The last few weeks have been busy, unlike most of the past year. I've been back in England for almost a year now, and as soon as I returned I started university. I have just completed my first year of Computer Science, and will be returning for the second year in late September, so long as my grades are good enough (which I'm pretty confident about). Course wise, the year has been ok, a little on the boring side, but I'm really looking forward to the modules next year, which will see the course really begin to amp up. First year is just about getting everyone to a certain standard, before the juicy stuff begins. It'll be much harder, and I'll have to put in far more work, but it should also be way more interesting.

The last day of the uni year saw me turn 21, it's quite scary how time is flying now, and I'm sure I was hanging around here when I was 15(!) - insane testament to the standing power of blogotomy. I started working 2 days after I got back to Birmingham, and have been working full time ever since - it's going very well, I can't be bothered to explain what I'm doing, but it's a good mix of programming and business.

I've decided that my fitness levels are woeful for a 21 year old, so I've started cycling to work and back every day, thats about 5 miles per day up and down hills, 5-6 days a week. It's a start, and I'm already finding it easier than when I first started. I don't get home covered in buckets of sweat anymore. That alone isn't enough though - that's good enough for the cardio, but I'm also going to be joining a gym with my brother in the coming week or so (when I get paid) and will be doing some weight work there. Finally, I'm going to give up smoking, hopefully on the 1st July, in line with the indoor smoking ban that's coming into effect in England on that date. I've tried a number of times before, and failed, but this time I really am serious about it. I've always said "I'm going to give up soon" too, my friends hate hearing it, so it's about time I acted on it.

It's been good catching up with my friends and family who live down here, and I've become far more productive than ever I was at university this year - I guess working full time puts you into a routine, unlike the student life. I go to bed at a reasonable time, and actually get stuff done now. It's a welcome change, because I was really starting to struggle with the amount of fuck all I was doing as a student. It's nice to have a rest here and there, but doing nothing all day every day isn't good for anyone.

In other slightly bad news, it's been a bad week for my family - my Dad got pushed to the floor in an argument with a drunk beefy looking motorcyclist when I was with him, I almost called the police. The guy was wearing a helmet and was huge, if he has decided to start laying into us there really wouldn't have been much we could do about it. Luckily, my Dad managed to defuse the situation, but it left me feeling so shit; seeing my Dad get attacked like that and being so utterly unable to do anything about it. It really hit me. Then, a couple of nights ago, my brother and his friend got robbed at knife point on their way home from a night out. This country disgusts me, and there are yet another two reasons on my ever growing list of "why I will be leaving this country after university."

Back Home

Wed Sep 6th 14:40:24 2006 *

Well, I'm finally back home, after a 20 month stint travelling that was supposed to last only 6 months! Had some awesome times along the way, I wont go into major detail because I could write a book on that shit. Suffice to say that it's pretty shit to be back home now, that I'm looking forward to travelling in the future and that I'd recommend it to anyone. Lots of crazy shit happened, I'm also now banned from a continent (Australia) for three years for visa violations, but it's all good ;)

I'm off to university to start my Computer Science degree in a couple of weeks, same uni/course as rel, should be pretty sweet. Although I'm pretty out of the loop now, I havn't touched computers in all the time I've been away in any serious way, although I'm sure it wont take long for me to slip back into it. I've got my laptop up and running with Ubuntu now too, should come in handy for the C++ part of my course which will be delivered Linux stylee.

Just got a phone call from my brother, asking me how to "write sideways" in word... wtf, it's late at night, freak :o)

Oz Trip: Back In Melbourne

Thu Dec 8th 00:21:53 2005 *

Well I just drove from Perth to Melbourne, about a 5000km journey, over the last 10 days. It's weird being here where it all started, with a totally different crowd. I'm probably going to sell my car here this week too, I'm in desperate need of the money. Then I'll get a coach to Sydney, check that out around the Christmas period, then possibly fly back to Perth where I have a job to go back to if I want and a few other reasons.

It's been about 10 months now, the start of the trip seems a lifetime ago, yet it's gone so fast. Many things have changed and I'm definitely a different person now, doing this has been the best choice I ever made and I'd recommend doing it to anyone - it's so easy. I've driven over 25,000km in that time and in doing so have seen some of the most amazing and awe inspiring things that I'm ever likely to see. For those of you without family obligations, get out of the standard routine and see some of the world. Fuck the job, forget the comfort of normality; one thing I've learnt is that the invisible chains we create for ourselves really aren't there. Do new things all the time. There's little to stop you waking up one day and adventuring out somewhere new (even if it's for a day, or a week) for no other reason than you just feel like it. It doesn't necessarily have to be far. Use more opportunities. Say yes more.

Oz Trip: How Goes It?

Thu Sep 22nd 23:21:14 2005 *

It's been ages since I've updated anything online, so I figured here might be a good place to start. I'm still in Perth now, and most likely will be until about mid November. My cousin and friend from back home have travelled over here now, which is cool.

This past week I've hammered my body with abuse, mainly alcohol related, to the point where a couple of very embaressing things happened. Unfortunately for you, I'm not going to share them. Surfice to say it involved nakedness, female toilets and a whole lot of memory loss. Anyway, my financial situation is by far the worst it's ever been in my whole life. Luckily (or not?) for me, I start a new job tomorrow.

Remember the entry I made about the fair I did up north? I'm pretty sure that I said something along the lines of "never again." Well, the Perth Royal Show is here tomorrow, and guess who'll be on the side shows and simulator? That's right ladies and gentlemen, roll up roll up, Crisp will be doing 14 hour days for 8 days solid. I don't really mind, because it's a much larger fair than before - and everything is already set up. That means no hard labour, just long hours on my feet, which I can cope with. And although the wage isn't the best in the world, with the amount of hours I'll be doing and getting paid in one lump sum of cash at the end I'll be able to do things like, oh say, pay rent, pay some tax on my car, drink myself into another coma etc.

IT's all good fun :D
