Blogotomy in other languages

Fri Jun 17th 22:18:09 2005 *

If ever Blogotomy wants to support foreign languages, pages could be filtered through Google's translator. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has thought of this, but when you navigate around, the entire site will be in whatever language you choose (I chose Italian for this example), including the individual blogs. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Hell, if I knew PHP, I'd help develop the modules for it (you are using PHP, right?). Users could select a language preference, which would default to English, and whenever they choose a page, the web server checks the language the user selected to see if it's in a different language than the page was written in (for example, if a user writes his blog in Spanish and someone who chose Spanish as their default language wouldn't need a translation) and if it is, it requests that the page be translated into the requestor's preferred language and sends the output to the user. This makes it transparent to the user.

Two things to think about.

  • There will be an extra hit on the server from Google whenever a page needs to be translated. Need to make sure the server can handle it.
  • Google's server changes the links so that you can navigate the site in the chosen language. The script will have to re-filter that so the links don't point to Google. If you look at the address contained within the link I gave, you'll see that it'll be very easy to parse that out. ;-)

I'd love to hear everybody's thoughts on this.

I really need to post here more often.

Thu Apr 21st 10:48:38 2005 *

The site's lookin' pretty nice. I really like the sidebar idea -- I might put a few things in there, like links to the Wiggles home page or something equally silly and irrelevant.

Things here at Fort Gordon are winding down. I'm nearly finished with training here; I've got less than a week left in the classroom and we head to the field for a week or two (nobody's really sure), then graduation and I get the hell out of here. I'll be heading back to Florida to see some friends and family. My sister's on mid-tour leave from Korea (I did mention she was in the Army, too, didn't I?) and she'll be here with her Class A (Dress) uniform for my graduation. All the guys'll be drooling. That's okay, because she's bringing her boyfriend, some Staff Sergeant she met in Korea. :-)

I'm so ready to get out of here, though. Can't wait to get back home to pick up all my stuff and cram it all into the back seat of the new car I'm going to buy when I get there. :-) I've got a huge box of books that weighs about 100 lbs (it's packed with all sorts of programming goodness), some clothes, my computer (can't wait to get that back!) and a few other miscellaneous items that I don't really remember all that well. But that's about it. I had to get rid of everything when my mom moved out to Vegas, 'cause I was storing everything I owned at her place, so it should all fit into the car.

I'm trading the truck in because I'd lent it to one of my buddies while I've been in training and haven't been able to drive it. He wanted to take over payments because I was going to buy a new car, but decided against it now. When I went to pick it up after Basic, it smelled like smoke, the seats were filthy (he works in construction), there was an exhaust leak so the engine was loud and didn't run well, the spare-tire holder was broken, and the list goes on and on. All this happened in two months. He replaced the starter, so that was a plus. :-\

In other news: my girlfriend, Manda (the one I've been in love since high school), broke up with me shortly after coming to visit me. She couldn't take the long distance, apparently. Weird, this was the one relationship I've had that I expected to last and it ended up being one of the shortest I've ever had. There are lots of details, but I don't feel like reliving it at the moment.

After I leave Ft. Gordon, I'll be stationed at Ft. Bliss. So I'll either be in the signal company they've got out there (which would be okay, I'd just work in a commo shop repairing radios) or I'll be put into an Air-Defense Artillery brigade, where I'll be working on anything from radios to networks. I wouldn't mind either job, they'd both be pretty fun.

What else is going on? Oh yeah, a buddy of mine, Nik, and I are both setting up websites. He's getting one together for his band and mine will just be a plain-old personal web page. Nik's site, so far, has some songs he's written and some pictures up from his shows he's played here in Augusta and back home in Michigan. The pictures he put up are directly from his digital camera so they're about a half-meg apiece and the songs he's uploaded are in WAV format, so they're pretty huge, too. I'll be working on it this weekend to help him out, 'cause he has no idea what he's doing. :-) My site's just going to be a place to post some stuff about me, show off some projects I've worked on, pictures, and other crap I feel like putting on there. :-) I've been wanting my own site for a long time now, but I never could come up with a good domain name. Everything I wanted to use was taken, and I didn't want to do little variations on them like hyphenating or changing to .net or .org, because I know how the general public deals with computers and my computer-illiterate family and friends would never find the thing if I did that ("but it should know I meant to put that!" -- My aunt, I kid you not..).

Looks like I can never get away with short posts here. Hehe well, if i posted more than once a month I might be able to only put a paragraph or two per post. ;-) *sigh* Such is life.. Have a good day, everybody. I've gotta get ready for training. Our class until Tuesday (when we get out of the classroom permanently) is on a system called FBCB2 (Force XXI Battle Command Brigade and Below), a Unix system installed in the HMMWVs (aka HummVees or Hummers) that is basically one huge wireless mobile network connecting commanders to all their units out in the field. It's pretty cool.

Holy crap, Jamie actually posted something!

Thu Feb 24th 09:01:24 2005 *

Haven't posted in a long time now. Feels weird to be back here. Anyway, I got another blog when Tyler told me that Blogotomy was going down until the new one was finished... or something. I don't post much in that one, either, and it's only read by about 3 people. :-) But I haven't even had much to talk about since I arrived here at Ft. Gordon for more training. Here it is pretty much in a nutshell:

Got in trouble for keeping my cell phone when I was supposed to turn it in. The drill sergeant wasn't happy about that.

We have different "phases" of AIT (advanced individual training, the part of training that I'm in right now), and we get a few more privileges at each phase. The different phases are 4, 5 and 5+. They start at 4 because the first three are during Basic Training. Why they go from 5 to 5+ and not to 6 is quite a mystery. But phase 5 is where I am right now. All we had to do to get there was pass a PT test (had to do 40 push-ups, 50 sit-ups and run 2 miles in under 16:36 -- I did much better than that ;-) although my run time did get worse), a written test of our knowledge of things like chain of command and a lot of things we learned in Basic, and a room and wall-locker inspection. Pfft. Easy stuff. But I got my cell phone back (actually, I'm just allowed to have one, they still have the one they confiscated from me, but I bought a new one -- I know, I'm terrible, but I wanted to upgrade, anyway) so I'm quite happy about that.

Biggest news of all was actually before I got here to Ft. Gordon. I wrote several months ago about a woman I'd known for many, many years and just how much I'd been in love with her the entire time (even while I dated other women). You've probably guessed that this is either really great news or really bad news. It's good news, folks. :-) She and I got together just a few days after I got home from Ft. Benning. It was tough leaving her, though. She's a first-grade teacher back home. I miss the hell out of her. I call her every night (I train at night, so I don't get home until about midnight) she calls me every morning, we e-mail each other all the time (though not as much as we did when I first got here), send IMs whenever it's not feasible to talk (I use AIM on my cell as a few of you here know) and while we're at it we send telepathic messages back and forth just to have another avenue of communication. :-) Really, she's awesome. Makes me feel like the greatest man on earth.

I haven't had anything to eat yet and they woke us up at 4am for a surprise drug test (after I went to bed at 1) so I'm both tired and hungry. I don't know if I'll actually eat anything yet, 'cause I still haven't taken a shower. I'll probably do that before training, though. Shower, that is. Well, hopefully eat, too. Also, the espresso machine's broken here at the café. I wasn't a coffee drinker until I got here. One of my buddies got me into it. I'm still not really into it, but this morning would be a good morning to have a friggin' latté. I'm just draggin' pretty bad and I'm not even sure if what I'm writing makes sense. It makes perfect sense to me now, but that's because of the frame of mind I'm in at the moment.

My girlfriend, Manda, is trying to talk me into going to OCS -- Officer Candidate School. She keeps bringing it up. It's cute. :-) Her dad was a Captain in Vietnam, so he'd mentioned to her all sorts of benefits of being an officer over being an enlisted soldier. I've been thinking of going to OCS since before I enlisted, but I haven't quite finished the bachelor's degree, the main requirement for OCS. The Army has a program called Green-to-Gold where they discharge you and pay for your college as long as you promise to come back to be an officer. Officers get paid a whole lot more (I'm makin' absolute crap pay), everybody salutes you (that was actually my main reason for wanting to do it! :-)) with the exception of superior officers, you work regular hours nearly all the time -- depending on your MOS (military occupational specialty) -- and all sorts of other good things. Gonna try to head that route.

That's all I've got for now.

I've returned

Thu Dec 16th 00:19:05 2004 *

I'm back from Basic Combat Training at Ft. Benning, Georgia . . . finally. Didn't think it'd ever end. Just wanted to let everyone know I'm back, but right now I'm exhausted and I'm going to hit the bed. I'll be online tomorrow and will post something more worthwhile. :-)

Ship out at 0530

Tue Oct 5th 15:59:57 2004 *

At 5:30 AM EDT tomorrow morning, I will be at the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) getting ready to leave for Fort Benning, GA. I'm so nervous.

I've got so much to do before I go, so I can't make this too long (ha! When have you guys ever known me to make short posts?).. There is still plenty of cleaning and packing to do, as well as furniture rearranging (my mother asked me to move some of her furniture before I left, grr..). I'll probably be up late tonight taking care of all that.

I've still got to take care of getting my college transcripts to my recruiter so he can submit them. There was a problem with their fax machine (possibly related to the hurricane, since the school is on the east coast of Florida, right in the path of Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne) and I didn't get the request in on time. I need to get that faxed in. I hope it's not too late. That will move me up another rank.

Speaking of the east coast (I don't consider myself as being on the east coast because I'm on the west coast of Florida and I've been here so long that it seems so far from the Atlantic Ocean), I went over there for the weekend to see a bunch of friends I've known since the 9th grade. Had an absolute blast. At first I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to go because I didn't have anywhere to stay (and all the hotels were slammed full), but it all worked out. Got lots o' hugs from the ladies before I came back, which is always nice. One of my buddies, Eric, said he wants to buy my truck, so that'll get me out of that payment (I'd like to buy something else later, either a new truck, a nice car or a motorcycle). Got lots of exercise (and an elbow to the eye) playing frisbee (actually, the elbow came from wrestling Eric for the frisbee, but it was an accident, I think). In the end, fun was had by all.

I didn't get everything accomplished with Blogotomy development that I meant to. I know Tyler understands, but I committed to it and didn't follow through. Oh well, I'd better learn not to do that in the Army. :-)

Time for me to finish up some things here, so I guess this is it until some time in December. Take care, all.

Genius idea regarding ISOs..

Mon Oct 4th 22:45:59 2004 *

This just occurred to me while chatting with a friend about downloading ISOs for Linux distributions.

A Unix tar file is simply a collection of files archived into a single file, retaining directory structure. An ISO file, though the format and intended use is different, serves the exact same purpose. Tar files are virtually always compressed to reduce transfer time across the wire. Why not do the same with ISOs?

Some might say that ISOs are large and would take too long to decompress. But which is faster, transferring 350MB more of data across a network connection or restoring a compressed ISO using the power of the blazing-fast processors available to us today? I'd have to do some testing before I went ahead and said that decompressing them on your own machine would indeed be faster.

Now, I'll admit, there may be some reasons not to go along with this idea. In the case where your CPU is already under heavy load (such as in compiling a large project), you may prefer to download the raw ISO -- a much less CPU-intensive process -- in order to spare the cycles to allow your other, more important operation to finish in a timely manner. This is much the same train of thought as restricting network bandwidth to your file-sharing application so it doesn't slow the network down to a crawl while you download your new favorite porno flick.

Also, network bandwidth to CPU speed ratio varies widely and in cases where this ratio is much higher, it may be more efficient, time-wise, to download the raw data.

Maybe both options should be offered on download servers? Your opinions are most welcome.

Much to do before leaving.

Fri Oct 1st 19:42:28 2004 *

Yesterday was my last day of work before I leave for the Army on Wednesday. So far, this is what I know I need to do:

  • pack all my stuff up and move it into my mom's place
  • rearrange the furniture there so all my stuff will fit
  • schedule a security interview with the Dept. of Defense so they can tell me whether I qualify for the security clearance that I need for my job in the Army
  • get my bills caught up (one student loan and my Radio Shack credit card should be all that I'm behind on now -- does wonders for your credit rating :-\)

That's all I can think of at the moment. I leave bright and friggin' early on Wednesday morning. I need to gather some addresses so I can write people from Basic training (been a while since I wrote an actual letter), since I won't be able to use a computer. That's going to be rough.

Tyler and I were supposed to have a meeting Thursday, but we had to reschedule. He posted this on his blog, but I figured I'd also mention it. My old boss was retiring and we were throwing him a retirement party which started at the exact same time we start our meetings. The date and time weren't up to me, so don't shoot me. I meant to say something before Thursday, but I've had plenty of other things going on to distract me. Anyway, long story short, I drank too much, played really well at pool (somehow I think the two are connected), and ate some chicken that wasn't nearly spicy enough (either that or the spiciness of the chicken paled in comparison to the blazing inferno in my mouth caused by the tequila). All in all, a fun night.

We rescheduled our meeting for Tuesday, same time (did we ever figure out what time that is in GMT?). I've finished half of what I set out to do for the week (and Tyler tried to add in the WYSIWYG editor and broke everything, hehe), but that was the easy part -- I simply created a form to add a blog entry and the logic to go with it. It only took me a half hour. The other half, implementing the comments, is extremely tricky, because we're going to have threaded comments. Creating them isn't all that bad (though I'm still working on an interface for that), but displaying them in a threaded manner is making my brain hurt. I'd like to get it done before I leave, but I'll be so busy that I don't think that will happen. Still going to give it a shot, though.

Blogotomy Dev Chat 2.0

Fri Sep 24th 16:53:01 2004 *

I tried to edit the meaningless ramble out of it. Unfortunately, some of that meaningless ramble was necessary in order to understand what was going on in several parts. :-) Either way, here it is.

**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Thu Sep 23 18:50:28 2004

Sep 23 18:50:28 --> You are now talking on #blogotomy

hvWELCOME everyone!
hvhehe
hvThis is the 2nd of many meetings Jamie and I plan on having to discuss Blogotomy development.
hvThere is a format we've created for this meeting.
hvYou all get to be flies on the walls...
hvwhile Jamie and I discuss a few things...
hvmainly covering last week's work.
hvusually a tech discussion of some sort...
hvand finally plans for this week...
hvthen we unmute you all for some Q&A
hvso please save the questions until the end, and Jamie... I guess we should start.
frequencySounds good.
hvI suppose they have no choice in a moderated channel.
frequencyhehe
hvYou're the man this week! Lay it down.

Sep 23 19:04:14 --- Crisp is now known as think_again

frequencyAlrighty

Sep 23 19:04:30 --- think_again is now known as Crisp

hvremind me to unignore crisp

Sep 23 19:05:00 --- Crisp is now known as lmao

Sep 23 19:05:10 --- lmao is now known as Crisp

frequencyI cleaned up the Buddies script and the interface for it. It now shows the buddies (in alphabetical order, too), allows you to view their profile (once that's created) and their blog
frequencys/script/method/
hvLooks killer!
frequencyAlso, the RemoveBuddy script no longer depends on the User ID.. you can use the identity..
hvNice
frequencyI basically made it so that the Buddies method uses identities only. it has no concept of user ids..
hvThe whole id v. identity thing has always been a sore spot for me.
frequencyHow so?
hvwell... indexing makes the identity lookups fast.
hvbut use of integers for lookups is very very quick.
frequencyyeah.. that's the one reason i like having the user ids as opposed to relying solely on identities..
hvya me too.
frequencyanother reason for us to use it, though, is the mutable-identity feature you wanted to have..
hvYup
hvI'm sure we'll get some question on that.
hvOkay...
frequencyi don't doubt that
hvDid you happen to take a stab at the add user?
hvI wasn't sure if you were going to do it or not from your email
frequencyNope.. Haven't had the time.. The only other thing I remember doing was the RecentEntries deal..
frequencyOh hehe, yeah I said if you weren't going to do it, I was..
hvOkay... that's actually more code than I did this week.
hvI got hung up on the whole notification thing.
hvAre we ready to go into that?
frequencyI am if you are..
hvAnything else you want to mention?
hvOkay
frequencyNope, that's all I've got so far..
hvI'm guessing you read the wiki page?
frequencyYeah, and I added a little bit to it, too..
hvoh! Let me check it.
frequencyThat is, unless you updated it last night..
hvnope.
hvthe other day...
frequencyI just appended my stuff to the end to keep your stuff intact..
hvI see it.... I like it.
hvI like the idea of generic notify types
frequencyI just thought it'd make it more abstract.
hvsome additional delete events could be moderating in group blogs.
hvmoderator could delete a post.
hvor comment.
frequencySounds good..
hva user could delete a comment from their blog entries as well.

Sep 23 19:17:28 --> c138 (c138@Zoite-5C4D7E0.in-addr.btopenworld.com) has joined #blogotomy

hvExcellent
hvwelcome c138...
hvchannel is moderated... we'll get to Q&A in a minute.
hvOkay... for this week.
hvI'm hoping to get group blogs working.
frequencyAwesome.
hvI think in the thick of that I'll be able to get the user add form ready too.
hvThat's about all I can spare time wise this week.
frequencyI'm going to try to get the AddEntry and possible AddComment forms and scripts ready..
hvVery cool
hvWill that include display?
frequencyyeah
frequencyi figure i'll try and use the same style that you used for entries
hvAre you going to work on threading the comments, and making each comment "replyable"?
hvDon't need to... I'm just wondering.
frequencyyep.. threading is going to be kinda tricky, but i think i can get it..
hvyup it will... will probably require some mods to comment table.
hvneed a parent field..
frequencyyeah, that's another thing we need to do, is get the database transferred over.
hvyes, yes we do.
hvI'll stick on this notify biz and we'll have notify table v. 0.0.0.0.0.0.1 out this week.
hvhehe
frequencyhehe
hvleaving some room for improvement in there.
frequencysome.. heh
hvOkay... should I release the hounds?
hvhehe
frequencymight as well..

Sep 23 19:24:46 --- hv sets mode -m #blogotomy

hvokay... floor is yours folks.
Hackmoi've got a suggestion
hvIf anyone is still awake.
frequencyOkay, guys.. time for Q&A, but don't bombard us.. :-)
hvgo ahead hackmo
Hackmohow about an option to categorize our blogs
Hackmoas in tech, life, suicide notes etc..
frequencylol
hvIt's been discussed. We might not have it for release 1 but we will be including it.
hvlol...
hvwho is teh suicide guy?
frequencyActually, your browser has that functionality, in the Bookmarks section.. ;-)
hvanyone know him?
hvI actually want it too.
Hackmolol I don't know him
c138Me neither
hvOne thing I thought about was creating a category for every group you're in...
hvthen when you post and assign a category... it gives you the option to cross post to the group
Hackmoother thing that would be cool is the ability to search for blogs
frequencyoh, is that what the categories table is for in the current db?
hvYes... err... no... err... I can't remember.
hvWhat would you like to search for Hackmo?
frequencyHackmo: you mean search for text within the blogs on the site?
subfloodwell if you had hundreads of blogs you can just put the date in and boom
c138Could you the google site search feature.
frequencylike "show me all the blogs that talk about raccoons"?
hvThere will be lots of URL magic coming...
frequencyc138: yeah, but with content that's updated so frequently, it'd be tough for Google to keep up
Hackmoyeah you could search for specific words in blogs or search for all blogs in X catagory, from x date etc.
hvfor example... you will be able to do something like /users/tyler/20040923
c138very good point, indeed
hvand get the entries for that date.
c138Hadn't thought of that.
subfloodyep thats what I was talkin about hv
hvReLik has offered to sponsor our "Google indexing in real time". Thanks rel!
frequencyhaha excellent!
hvsubflood: you'll haev it.
hvhave it even
subfloodwhat about making the blog show on your personal site...I think google does that
frequencyyou mean like a feed?
c138Is the site going to be compatible with handheld devices? PDAs, WAP phones etc..?
subfloodi dunno
hvWE WILL BE FULLY SUPPORTING RSS!
hvYou can do what you'd like with the rss feed.
hvInclude it in your own sites... etc.
hvI'll provide some example code for doing that kind of thing.
frequencyc138: it better be.. i love reading blogs from my cellphone when i'm out..
hvI've already provided permalinks for each entry.
c138Good, glad to hear it.
hvWe're also talking about ways to allow you to customize the blogs as they appear at blogotomy.
frequencythat was actually something i blogged about, and Ty said he wants to support those devices
Hackmoas in custom css?
hvHackmo: yes
subfloodyea custom css would be nice
frequencywe touched on that last week.. didn't we say it might not be in v1, but it should be in a future release?
frequencyi can't remember at the moment
hvWe're supplying class tags and id tags for all the divs and elements... in the hopes that we'll be able to allow folks to work on their own CSSheets for their blog.
hvya... won't be first release.
hvanything else?
Hackmosorry if this was in last weeks chat I can't remember seing it in the log though but will we still need to put in html tags or will it be wysiwyg?
hvboth
hvin the first release.
hvlimited html
hvno <script> tags...
hvno hex...
hvno octal...
hvit will all be filtered.
hv... I hope...
Crispoh shit
Crisphi

*** Welcome to the conversation, Crisp!

frequencyTy, did you unignore Crisp? i forgot to remind you
hvdid just now
hvlol
frequencyhehe ok, just makin' sure
c138lol
hvya... thanks Jam
frequencyno prob
relso are you going to release the scripts before they're live or you just going to chuck them all up together
hvhehe
hvThe python scripts?
frequencyit'll all be released at once.. the platform is different..
frequencys/released/deployed/
hvYa... the scripts alone aren't all that interesting.
hvthey're only part of the zope solution...
hvsee www.zope.org for more 411
relwhy not just have a /test for bug/security testing first
relah
Crispk
frequencyZope is very different from Tomcat.. wouldn't do a whole lot of good..
Crispare you going to bug test though?
hvThe community is small enough that putting the whole thing in the wild is the most effective testing for us right now.
hvwe've got dev tests.
hvbut we know that everyone will use the site in their own way... and stuff will come up.
frequencywe need some sort of bug report submission scheme..
hvAgreed
hvthink voting
Crispdunno if this has come up but can we 1) block ip/ranges 2) have people subscribe to blogs so an email/pm/whatever is sent when a new post is made

*** Both of these points were brought up in last week's chat log.

frequencyahhh, yes
frequencyread last week's log
relhave you dumped the idea of /users/USER
frequencyno
Crispuh
HackmoI'm off to bed now
Hackmocya all later
hvwe will include /USER though
hvlater Hackmo, thx buddy
c138whats happening to the subdomains?
subfloodlater man
Crispi hope we can still access blogs like crisp.blogootmy.com
c138seeya hackmo
frequencyg'nite Hackmo
c138indeed Crisp
hvc138: I want to keep them.

Sep 23 19:43:57 <-- Hackmo has quit (Quit: .)

hvit's not a super high priority right now... but I do plan on working on it for release.
hvmy goal is to not lose any functionality in this release...
hv... but the new platform tends to throw wrenches in the works.
hvAnd I haven't even looked at it yet.
frequencyI'll look through the book (btw, have you gotten yours yet?) and see if I can find it in there under the Admin chapter
Crispit should be though, because subdomains are a huge part of the functionality of blogootmy, if you realise it or not; most other blog sites you get like /users.x?user=crisp or something else horrible and messy and inpersonal
c138yeah, it's a unique thing
c138special even

*** Actually, I think LJ has this for paid accounts. Don't quote me on that, though.

relc138 needs special
hvOkay... you've convinced me.
hvI'll work on it this week.
relokay
relso about these cash giveaways then
frequencyTy, you should buy the domain blogootmy.com so Crisp can go to the site without retyping the name..
hvlol
frequency;-) j/k Crisp

*** Apparently I was/am in a mood to pick on Crisp a lot. But c'mon, he called it blogootmy twice in a row! What are the odds?

hvI'll will right after I buy Hackers.com lol
hvNOT
frequencylol
hvokay... any other questions...
Crispim sure i had loads but
Crispapproximate release date? by the end of jan?
hvWell... that's something Jamie and I are also discussing.
subfloodjan 2006
hv2007
hvclose though
hv;-)
subfloodahh yea lol
Crispi say that cause thats when im going to australia and it'd be good to use the group blog function for updates on our travels, rather than me coding my own script/site which was what i was gonna have to do before
frequencyif i weren't going to be off training to blow things up, i think we could definitely have a release by the end of the year..
c138You still going to have the last ten blogs list or similar? If it starts to get really popular it might be pointless.
hvI'll commit to end of Month Jan 2k5 though
hvyes
hvand additional lists
relany danger of insurgents if people reject the new order of things?
hvsomewhat customizable.
frequencythe Recent Entries list is already implemented, even..
hvinsugency will be welcome but please help us... not bring us to our knees.
reli believe this will be the goal of the insurgents
hvJamie... are we caching that list?
hvscratch that...
hvlet's not over cache...
hvlet's watch it at release anc cache where necessary.

relwill i be able to ban countries from my blog?
Crisplmao!
hvhaha... that's a great idea.

hvI could geographically come up with ip ranges for countries.

Crispshould have the option to plant a cookie for banning as well as stored ip ranges

frequencyeh, i doubt cookies should be allowed in the blogs..
hvban ip from blogotomy where people_visiting like 'relik'
c138eah, being able to see the logs for your blog would be good
c138*yeah
Crispow check out hv

frequency:-)
Crisphaha fags, no offence like ;)
hvwait...
hvtell me about the logs.

*** I think this was in reference to c138's suggestion about "seeing the logs for your blog", which we never actually talked about. Sorry, c138.

hvwhat do folks want to see?
Crispip's off all commenters (obviously)
Crisphits
relpartial ip of commenters atleast
Crispno there's no reason why it shouldnt be full
hvya... I don't want to do full ip
Crispwhy not
Crispwhats the point in having it at all
hvI'm a privacy advocate.
Crispwell it takes away most of the point
hvokay... no IPs then.
hv;-)
Crispyes but if someone posts on my blog...hey what about we can insert our own scripts (thus grabbing ips) :D

*** This next part is so funny it made my sides hurt from laughing so hard. Has nothing to do with Blogotomy development, but I decided I'd leave it in for comic relief.

relc138 example entry: 'my foot hurts'
relrider example entry: 'so brit and some other girl came round today'
reland so on
c138rel example entry: 'my wrist hurts'
hvWhat are the constructive reasons to allow you to see the IPs?
hvya... rider's is funny

hvDear Blog,

hvToday I beat my nutz with a hammer!

hvlook at me dis the users
hvokay...
Crisptyler: 'today i bough X, im totally stoked!'
hvRemind me to put in the COPPA stuff.
hvlol
relput in the COPPA stuff
hvI'll take that.
hvI'm perplexed on the IP issue.
hvI want to show them.
hvWho cares?
hvor we could make it user settable.
frequencywhat's the point of showing IPs?
Crisptyler: full ip's are there for a reason, if someone decides to post offensive material on my blog, then i have the right to report them to their isp, also I dont want to ban whole subnets and accidently decline whole isps from viewing my blog, etc
hvshowing them only to the user.
hvmight keep people more honest.
Crispit's no different to ip logging on a forum
frequencyCrisp: if you ban a single IP, that won't stop a user on a dynamic IP from repeatedly posting crap to your blog
hvI don't want to lose Crisp as a user because he wants to see the IPs so bad... he goes off and uses movable type on his own site...
hvknow what I mean Jamie?
hvwell... that's just it.
Crispwhich is why i suggested cookies, vis...certain people would be too stupid to realise
hvenough folks aren't smart enough to spoof anyway.

c138Should have read the logs though, guys

*** Amen, brother.

Crispi did
hveverything from anonymous non-uisers... to only your friends... or no one at all.
reli was going to, but it was too long
hvyou'll be able to set who sees what.
Crispyes but hv thats prevention, what if i want to cure (ie see ip)
hvYou'll have full reign over group blogs you're the owner of as well.
frequencyi was also thinking of having a block-certain-users option..
hvyes
hvstrict ban.
hvI'll add that to features.
frequencyof course, if you block users, you'll probably also want to block anonymous, too
relwill people be able to sign up or will it be invite-only still?
c138only one owner per group? or mutiple owners?

*** Somehow we left out c138's question _again_.

hvsign up will be open... for a time.

Crisp'typer'
Crisphaha frequency you're gonna need to update your perl script, you need a remove_shit() function
frequencyrel: all the unimportant stuff's being edited out of the log..
relso <frequency> is on auto replace with '' ?

*** I didn't see that shot first time around. Good one, though, Rel. :-)

Crispremove_shit(crisp,rel) should do it
frequencyCrisp: luckily, Perl works well with regexps.. remove_shit() can just filter anything that contains "rel" as an entire word.. ;-)

*** Too bad ReLik beat me to that one. And too bad I didn't see it.

hvya... jamie nuke the email addresses ... hehe

Reminder for Blogotomy Dev Chat

Tue Sep 21st 19:42:57 2004 *

This is just to remind everybody that Tyler and I will be having our weekly Blogotomy development chat on Thursday evening at 22:00 GMT (at least I think that's right -- it's 7pm Eastern time and 5pm Mountain time. If it weren't for Daylight Savings Time, I'd be able to keep track of how far behind GMT we actually are).

The chat will be held on irc.zoite.net in #blogotomy.

Assuming the agenda is the same this week as it was last week, it will start out with what Tyler and I have been working on, leading into what our plans are for the coming week, and finishing up with Ty and I answering your questions about Blogotomy development. Please make sure you have read the chat log from last week if you plan to attend (no sense answering the same questions two weeks in a row ;-)).

I'll be posting the chat log for this week, as well, in my blog, so check back with me on Thursday night or Friday afternoon if you can't make it to the chat.

Blogotomy Gospel According to Jamie

Sun Sep 19th 21:34:30 2004 *

Been hacking like a mad man today on Blogotomy. The codebase must be over twice as big as it was a week ago. It's really starting to look good. Only a few more features to add in until it becomes as functional as the beta. In fact, it already has one or two features that the beta does not!

Working on this has been tons of fun so far, partly because I'm helping to build something that people all over the world will use and partly because I'm working with a platform that's entirely new to me. It took quite a while before I learned enough about Zope (the web application framework on top of which Blogotomy will run) to do anything useful because it's so much different than what I'm used to. But once I got the ropes down, I found it so much easier to create things for Zope than for other web servers. And I'm still learning, too. The more things I try, the more things I learn. I've got a book on Zope, but I really don't even look through it much anymore. Now I'm on a "I wonder if this works..." kick. So far, nearly everything I've tried has worked (except nesting DTML tags, but I found that you can get the same functionality I was going for without doing that). So at least the people that designed the software were consistent.

I've been working on the buddy list interface most of the day. I had it working two days ago, but I was trying to make it more extensible. It now works just the way I wanted it to and is able to be used anywhere on the site very easily.

We're still working out details for the database. It's nearly finished; we have just a few features to play with. Once that's done, implementing the features provided by the data structures in the database will be a piece of cake. Also, I've got to write a script to convert the existing database to the new schema, because it's already pretty different.

If Tyler and I could work on this full-time, we'd have it deployed in no time. Maybe about 50 hours of solid coding and we could have it completely functional. That, of course, is for pure functionality, not looking pretty. It is also pure coding time, not counting design, of which we still have a little yet to do. So close, yet so far. It's okay, though, we keep each other motivated. :-)
