Happy New Year!!

Sun Jan 8th 21:28:31 2006

On the 7th I had a real bad day. Very short 7am session saw me down around $140 :/ I played like a donk and deserved it.

By the end of the day I managed to claw back around $70 to make a total deficit of $70 on the day, not good, but could have been a whole lot worse.

Ordered a second monitor so I can 8-table easier, my current set up is basically 4 each corner, 2 horizontal and 2 vertical, but it's not good for anything other than ABC poker.

I've mainly stuck to 4 tables this week and it's paid off, made some plays that impressed myself, having longer to watch the other players has helped a lot.

Mainly playing $50 buy-in tables now (I buy-in for $30) and a couple soft $0.15/$0.25 ($25 buy-in) tables when they're going. I don't think I can deal with losing 3 $50 buy-ins in a session just yet.

Most of this week was done at one very soft site, one table tonight had a player/flop of around 70%, it stayed like that for 2-3 hours allowing me to skim off +4.5 buy-ins.

Played a couple orbits at $0.5/$1.0 ($100 buy-in). They're certainly beatable, but those limits will be off the menu for a while yet.

Bankroll at $1,855.69 (+$669.99 for the month (so far..)).

What stakes and limit are you playing?

Regardless, the biggest and easiest money-maker of all is pocket pairs.

In a limit game you don't want to be calling anything less than 7s in early position, and unless it's TT+ fold to 2 bets cold.
You'll flop a set once in 8 times, and when you have that set you're 90%+ to win, so you can raise and re-raise.

In a NL game call preflop with any pocket pair from any position (but you really want to get in cheaply) because when you flop that set you should be taking buy-ins off people.

Also, simple maths, let's say you pay $1 to call with a pocket pair preflop, when you flop that set you want to make atleast $8 to be breaking even.

Think tight, play tight, QJo and KJo in early position is trash, throw them. You only want to be playing about 20% of all your hands.

Some stats flying `round the net indicate most people who are tracking their own play (myself included) note that opponents usually fold to a blind steal 70% of the time, whenever you're on the button and it's folded to you raise no matter what you have, if you keep taking blinds you're staying even while you wait for your big hands to pop up.

I'm bored with writing now so best books to pick up for Limit is Small Stakes Hold'em by Ed Miller (and Co) and for NL Phil Gordons' Little Green Book.

You'll make the price of the books back within a week, speculate and all that.
